Northern Cardinal

The official bird of no fewer than seven eastern states (but surprisingly not this one) the Northern Cardinal has led countless people to open a field guide or pick up binoculars for the first time. Cardinals have been extending their range northward for decades, in part, it seems, due to the spread of feeders filled with sunflower seeds. The vivid red male brightens any snowy day, and both males and females sing in the spring.
